Some Lundy Puffins at ASDA yesterday.
Breaking news has reached the DL Offices that a family of Lundy Puffins have migrated the 12 miles from their Atlantic Island sanctuary and have been seen making nests in the new Bideford Asda superstore – way up in the bright green signage! Ash Jamill Reports: It seems that an unusual seasonal fall in the National Marine Reserves Sand Eel population is making the comical, clown faced & much loved little feathered fellows consider any viable food option and the preponderance of tit-bits left over by shoppers at the Associated Dairies Superstore is proving to be too irresistible to them. What’s more the shy retiring seabirds seem to have been emboldened by the new environment and on Tuesday a pair of puffins were seen in aisle five, looking wistfully into the freezers of the fish section. The stores manager, Trevor Skinner, has even gone as far as to have asked ASDA headquarters in Preston Lancashire, for puffin-proof trolleys after a nasty incident involving a nursing puffin, a short sighted shopper and an overloaded trolley as well as permission to set up a PPZ or Puffin Protection Zone around the roof area. A spokesperson for ASDA’s next door neighbours, Pedantic Village, said that there was no evidence yet for Puffin encroachment onto the main site but said that they were monitoring the situation very closely. When quizzed the RSPCB said that this was an unprecedented behavioral change for the Puffins and was probably a result of Climate Change & Global Warming.
